The world’s oldest purpose-built cinema never ceases to astound. The Phoenix, a traditional single-screen movie theatre across the street from East Finchley tube station, presents films and other screen events (operas, tours) that are frequently difficult to find elsewhere. Rio Cinema, Dalston
This little independent shop is famous among east London residents and is located on Kingsland Road in Dalston. It’s housed in yet another Grade II*-listed Art Deco structure (are you noticing a pattern here? ), and it has a giant neon sign that’s ideal for Instagram.
When it opened its doors as the Kingland Empire in 1915, the Rio Cinema had a strong sense of community. Since then, both locals and visitors have assembled here.
Clara Ludski, a forerunner in business, kept an auctioneer’s store in the original structure. W.E. Trent, who later became Gaumont’s in-house architect, built the Kingsland Palace of Animated Pictures while he was a young man in 1909, making it one of London’s first theatres.
Clara purchased the properties on each side of the building. She commissioned architect George Coles to design a spectacular picture theatre for the neighbourhood’s expanding moviegoing culture to capitalize on Dalston’s growing interest in films.
As part of the regeneration project, which also involved the restoration of the building’s facade and nighttime illumination, a second screen was erected in Rio’s basement in 2017.
Rio fulfilled its objective of generating $125,000 and adding a second screen on December 29, 2017, thanks to the Mayor of London, residents, Rio members, and consumers. Ludski Bar opens in the basement next to screen 2 in May 2019, providing a welcoming place to relax before or after a movie and an excellent facility to rent for parties and screenings. The construction activity continues.
